Jack Draper splits with supercoach Wayne Ferreira

Exclusive: A coaching partnership between Ferreira and James Trotman has been dissolved with Draper now working solely with Trotman

British No 1 Jack Draper has parted company with “supercoach” Wayne Ferreira after four months, Telegraph Sport understands, and will revert to working only with his previous mentor James Trotman.
Ferreira and Trotman have formed a successful double-act since the South African – a former world No 6 with a reputation for taking out big names during his playing career – joined Draper’s team in late April.
In that time, Draper beat Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s, won his first ATP title in Stuttgart and climbed more than 20 places in the rankings to his current position – a new career high – of No 25.
But it’s never easy to combine two different viewpoints in the backroom, and the coaching partnership has now been dissolved.
Ferreira was keen on Draper reinventing himself as a more swashbuckling player who would go forward regularly to finish points at the net. This was hardly a controversial position, as it was obvious to all that Draper was previously getting involved in too many long and grinding baseline points, which failed to take advantage of his size and power.
Inevitably, though, there were teething issues amid the rebuild, and moments when Trotman needed to reaffirm some of the fundamentals that had already made Draper a top-50 player.
In a separate issue, Draper – who is due to open his US Open campaign against China’s Zhizhen Zhang on Monday or Tuesday – has been the subject of considerable criticism over the past week regarding a disputed call in last week’s Cincinnati Masters win over Felix Auger-Aliassime.
On match point, Draper appeared to hit a half-volley into the ground before the ball bounced up, clipped the net-cord, and then died in his opponent’s side of the court. Amid a lengthy protest from Auger-Aliassime, Draper offered to replay the point, but chair umpire Greg Allensworth awarded him the match anyway.
